About

I’m a college student and intern at the Hallmark Society in Victoria BC. during summer of 2010, I archived historical articles from the “Islander” insert that was once published weekly in Victoria’s Times Colonist newspaper. The end goal of the project was to create an onlineĀ searchable database, which is accessible to theĀ public. Many the articles I came across were fascinating, and highlighted many aspects of the colourful past of British Columbia, and the Pacific Northwest.

As I worked my way through several years of Islander issues, I posted brief summaries of some of my favourite articles on this blog.

    Hello,
I am working on a project about the history of Long Beach and I have a copy of an article from The Island entitled Building the Long Beach-Tofino Road in 1936. There are some fabulous pictures that go along with it and I’m trying to track them down. Do you have this article in your stack? If so, the copy I have does not have a date and I’m looking to fill this in. Thanks so much,

Hi, I just searched our database, and nothing came up. This probably means that the article has not yet been archived. So far the archives covers almost ever issue up to 1983, I have just begun 1984. All the articles that are added can be accessed immediately, so it would be worthwhile to check it out occasionally. It can be found here: http://victoriahistory.ca/ If you have any other details about the article like the name of the author or even the page number, I might be able to do a more detail search of the hard copies.

Thanks! The article may be more recent, but it’s hard to tell. No author so it must have been written in-house. All I have to start with is the title. Thanks for trying!
